Port for the people
After visiting Churchill, Manitoba, I found that the expansion of the Port of Churchill is a major local topic with mixed community opinions. I researched the port’s history and its importance for northern access, transportation, and economic opportunities as well as the risks.
Designing for Churchill’s remote location, harsh climate, and limited accessibility presents unique challenges. This project proposes a flexible building using shipping containers. Two ground-level containers move on tracks, allowing the building to “hibernate” in winter and extend in summer to open views toward Hudson Bay and the beluga whale migration.
In summer, the movable containers serve as observation stations for scientists and tourists; in winter, they convert into spaces for community events. The containers shift north–south along the Churchill River to respond to seasonal conditions. Upper levels provide research facilities.
To address limited accommodations for visiting researchers studying beluga whales, birds, and polar bears, the design includes shared living quarters for up to eight scientists, along with a communal kitchen and social space to support collaboration.
